In NPH Peru, we have around 57 girls living with us and we have the commitment of supporting them and providing them with opportunities for education, service and leadership.
As is the case in many other countries, Peruvian girls are devalued. When girls remain in school it increase their earning potential, they marry later and have fewer and healthier children. These girls understand that education is important and will ensure that their own children are educated as well.
Women in Peru represent a minority in legal rights, the patriarchal culture is still noticeable. Women receive less pay than men and have fewer employment opportunities. According to UNICEF, 13,000 girls suffer sexual abuse every year in Peru.
In NPH, we educate our girls to be strong and stand up for their rights. We also organize workshops with the psychologist department to talk about different issues. Educating our boys is also really important too, we engage our boys to advocate and take action for achieving gender equality.
Almost 40% of the girls living in NPH are between 16 and 25 years old, an important age to start becoming independent and knowing themselves. Some of them are already studying at university, others attend schools outside of the home.
Help us to empower our girls to become independent women and strong leaders in their families, communities, and country.
