Be prepared to be Cuddled

Kiwi volunteer visits NPH Peru and loves every minute!
March 1, 2016 - New Zealand

Tricia Garrard, our wonderful volunteer accountant, has seen the fruits of her labour - the sweet kisses and hugs from children at our NPH home in Peru.

Tricia says: "To someone considering visiting a home, I would say go! Be prepared to be cuddled and questioned."

For her, it was an eye-opening experience to see just how happy the children are, in spite of what many of them have suffered. Many of the children have lost their parents, through sickness, poverty, abandonment, neglect and abuse.

Coming to NPH, the children feel safe for the first time, and see each other as a big family. Tricia noticed that the kids really do treat each other as their own brothers and sisters.

To celebrate their birthdays, the children are given a cake (made by the volunteers). Tricia found it funny to see the difference between the boys and the girls. The girls were very clever and ate the cake until they were full. They put the rest of the cake in the fridge for later. The boys, however, functioned on a 'first-in, first-served' basis. "Not a crumb was left by the end of the night." Tricia laughs!

For Tricia the time flew by, as she really got stuck in and helped out where she could.

Seeing the kids with ripped clothing, Tricia decided to put her sewing skills to good use and set up a 'sewing clinic.' She also made some lovely quilts for the babies.

She was kept busy working in the kitchen, playing with the cute babies, and organising a special movie night for the kids.

One thing that upset Tricia was that the children were not getting their 5 plus a day. "They weren't even getting 1 piece of fruit a day!" Budget cuts have meant that there are not enough resources to give the children their fair share of fruit and vegetables. As such, Tricia made sure her donation went towards fruit and vegetables for the kids.
