A Beautiful Smile

Generous Kiwi sponsor funds braces for two NPH Mexico children
November 19, 2018 - New Zealand

14 children are on the NPH Mexico wait list for orthodontic treatment.

The first thing you notice about someone is their smile. For a teenager, having a crooked smile can be a cause of low self esteem and health problems.

This was certainly the case for Tulia (12 years old) from NPH Mexico until she was gifted the miracle of much needed orthodontic treatment by her generous and caring Kiwi sponsor.

Tulia had been on a waiting list to get braces, along with many other NPH young people. The treatment, however, is beyond NPH’s normal budget to assist even the most needing of it.

That's when Tulia’s amazing New Zealand sponsor stepped in! Having noticed Tulia’s wonky smile, he asked if he could help her get braces.

When the sponsor found out that the cost of full orthodontic treatment for a child at NPH Mexico is only $500, he was delighted. "My children got braces here in New Zealand and it was a lot more expensive!"

Thanks to this Kiwi donor Tulia will be able to smile more broadly than before! In her thank you letter to her sponsor, Tulia said, “I thank you so much for paying for my braces. You are improving my quality of life. From the bottom of my heart I hope that God blesses you. It makes me really happy to know that there are people who help others.”

So generous is Tulia’s New Zealand sponsor that, following this, he decided to support another child on NPH Mexico's waiting list (see Manuel in the pictures above).

Misaligned teeth are harder to clean and at risk of being damaged. Strain on the jaw can also lead to pain and headaches. Sometimes crooked teeth can also have an impact on a child’s self-confidence.

Orthodontic treatment will move the teeth into the correct position. This will also make them easier to clean, improving not only the child’s appearance, but their health.

The NPH Mexico orthodontic programme is a project that can only be funded thanks to generous donors from around the world. There are currently 14 children on the NPH Mexico waiting list.

Most of the NPH Mexico children benefiting from the orthodontic programme will visit the orthodontist once a month.

The treatment will include:

- One panoramic dental X-Ray to see if any teeth need extracting.

- Braces placement.

- 20-24 orthodontic appointments (may vary depending on development).

- One retainer for when the braces are removed.
